She was ok but had one thing on her mind which was 'shoot arrows and never get married' and was a bit annoying sometimes but still enjoyable a brat attitude maybe

I feel as if she is a very real character, and she is very well-developed. She certainly matured throughout the movie, and her relationship with her Mother is certainly very realistic and does have a very real and possible conclusion. It's not like they are all zippidy doo da in the end, but they learn to accept each other and embrace one another more than the beginning.

KataraLover picked No, she's pretty flat:
She doesn't really have much of a character to her. She's basically a combination of a lot of princesses before her. She can have the same qualities and personality traits as them but she also needs something to make her unique. But we don't learn why Merida is so rebellious like we did Ariel and Jasmine. I know I'll kind of sound like a hypocrite because I get defensive when people say this about Ariel but Merida just acts like the typical bratty teenage girl, minus for the going crazy over a boy. She causes a mess and she doesn't fix it, she doesn't defeat the villain or save the day, which bugs me about Ariel as well. However like I've said before Ariel had an excuse because if Eric didn't do it he probably wouldn't be as memorable. She's pretty flat and doesn't really have any development.

KataraLover: You said we don't learn why Merida is so rebellious, but we do. It's because her mom is forcing her into MARRIAGE, which is no small thing. She's definitely developed, but I wish they didn't make her so...irritable

I agree with prussiaducky. @KataraLover, I think we know just as much, if not more, of why Merida is so rebellious than Jasmine and Ariel. She basically has the same want as Jasmine, if for different reasons: neither of them really want to be princesses. Also, how is it the fact that Eric 'wouldn't have been memorable' an excuse for the fact that Ariel didn't fix her mess, just like Merida didn't.

KataraLover picked No, she's pretty flat:
But I feel like there could be more to the story with Merida than there is Ariel and Jasmine. Ariel is rebelling because she's fighting against the injustice of the human race, a very noble cause because they don't truly know that all humans are evil. She also rebels because of how her father is protective of her because of her mother. The Eric thing is that Ariel would've just been a totally awesome character that would've overshadowed Eric, who really would've just been basically just like the princes before him. So that's mostly the writers fault, not hers and I understand it.

As for Jasmine she lost her mother too so the Sultan could also be very protective of her because he lost his wife. She's never had freedom or been outside the palace walls. Merida on the other hand gets to go out, shoot arrows, climb mountains, and ride horses a lot, WAY more than Jasmine has ever done. Merida doesn't have much depth to her because she was rebellious even before the whole forced into marriage thing.

KataraLover. "Merida doesn't have much depth to her because she was rebellious even before the whole forced into marriage thing." ... No offense, but did you watch the movie? Yes, she's rebellious, because her mom constantly polices her every word and action and tries to force her to be the exact opposite of how she is.

The film establishes Merida as a very athletic, combative, hot-blooded girl that loves archery, sword fighting, horseback riding, wilderness survival, rock-climbing, and other physically exerting activities. Her mother expects her to discard it all completely and be calm, graceful, dainty, delicate, polite, studious, domestic, diplomatic, etc. To that end, her mom constantly monitors and nitpicks at her. The more her mother tries to force these standards on her, the more Merida rejects them.

Honestly, Ariel had plenty of freedom to go and do whatever she wanted as long as she stayed away from the surface, and Jasmine seemed to have a decent amount of freedom as a princess living in luxury as long as she stayed inside the palace walls. Sure, they couldn't physically GO where they wanted, but Merida's very personality and every waking moment was constantly monitored and policed. (Except Sundays, apparently.) Honestly, I think Merida would *kill* for the freedom that Ariel and Jasmine, or at least Ariel had.

I think she's very well-developed, and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like her. All the princesses are developed.

Again, what Tyger's said. she's one of the most well-rounded characters Disney's made. There's a lot of depth to Merida Rhythmic captured in her analysis- she goes from being selfish and rebellious to more compromising and respectful, but she'll always be fearless, independent, and intelligent.

Are half of you just voting for Elsa and against Anna/Merida because you like/dislike them?
