I don't think he is. He is very lonely (he showed up to the boat by himself, not belonging anywhere else), and I think that is wh he is a bit clingy. He may be rspected, but is clear that a lot don't really care for him (the settlers in the beginning). Definitely not. He is a very complex character. Heroic but still romantic. He was open to learn new things with a totally strange and listened to her some points, so I think he is a pretty great character. And pretty selfless.

He is simply the hero...there is a glimpse of something like a layered character when he insults Pocahontas way of live, but one song later he is back in hero mode again. And while he gets and understanding that the land belongs to the natives, at no point he questions if he and his people should be there in the first place.
He is just too perfect - so perfect that even the villain fanboys him.
