In the process of evolution, it was the egg that came first. Fish laid eggs, as did insects and arachnids. Amphibians had eggs. Reptiles perfected the hard-shelled egg. Fish were laing eggs way back into the Devonian period. Birds, in the form of dinosaurs, didn'tarise until the Triassic. The Devonian period was way back in the Precambrian, hundreds of millions of years ago. The Triassic, maybe 200 million years.

The egg since that's the first thing in the chicken cycle anyway.
