Imagine a serial killer loose in your home town, killing people in horrible ways. In the book Death Note: Another Note, the Los Angeles BB Murder cases, this is what is happening.
How did Beyond Birthday become a serial killer? What drove him to kill three innocent people? Beyond Birthday wasn’t a normal child for many reasons. The biggest is because he was born with Shinigami eyes. These are the eyes of a Death god, and they allow you to see a person’s name, and lifespan. How did he get these? Nobody knows, but the only explanation is that there was a, “Shinigami stupid enough to drop their eyes [To Earth].” (Mello, Death Note, Another Note, Pg. ). When he was young, his mother was killed by a mugger, and his father was hit by a train. So he was sent to Wammy’s house, an orphanage for gifted children in Winchester, England.
Wammy’s, however, is not an ordinary orphanage. It’s an orphanage to train children to become L, the world’s greatest detective. Quillsh Wammy, A.K.A. Watari, founded this orphanage in order to create a successor for L. Beyond Birthday was the second child taken into Wammy’s. He was called B, or Backup. He wasn’t chosen to be the successor for L. He ran away from Wammy’s house when he was older, in his teens.
He conducted a plan to succeed L in his own way, to be the worlds greatest criminal. To create a murder that L could never solve. He didn’t just want to be a copy of L, he wanted to be the best. “The copy would surpass the original” (Beyond Birthday, Final Page, Death Note: Another Note, pg.). He would kill three people, and then himself as a third, making it look as if he was the fourth victim, so that L wouldn’t be able to fine out who killed them, because he would be dead. How did he plan to pull this off you ask? Well, I will explain this by explaining all his victims, and exactly how he killed them.
The first victim was Believe Bridesmaid. He was a forty year old Freelance writer living alone. He was killed on July 31st, 2002. He was drugged, and then strangled from behind. After he was dead, his chest was carved by a knife. At the crime scene, the door had been locked from the inside, and there were four Japanese straw dolls, called Wara Ningyo, nailed to the wall. The entire house had been wiped clean, even the light bulbs, and every page of the books. There was no evidence.
The second murder was a thirteen year old girl named Quarter Queen. She lived with her mom in a small apartment. She was killed August 4th 2002. She was first drugged, like Believe Bridesmaid, and then beaten to death, the back of her head caved in. Her eyes were also scratched out. The door was locked, like Bridesmaids, but there were only three Wara Ningyo dolls at this murder scene. There was also, no evidence, and everything was wiped clean.
The third victim was Backyard Bottomslash. She was a twenty six year old bank clerk. She had Beyond Birthday had conducted an experiment with this one. He wanted to see if a human could die of internal hemorrhaging without rupturing any internal organs. So, he tried to beat her arm till she died. This did not work, so he took out a knife, and stabbed Bottomslash to death. He then cut off her left arm, and her right leg. He left only two Wara Ningyo’s at the scene. The door was locked, and the place was wiped clean just like the last two murders.
Beyond Birthday left clues for L to decipher. Nine days before the first murder, on July 22nd, Beyond sent the police a very complex crossword puzzle. Nobody could solve it, except for L. It said the address to the first crime scene. Then, at the first crime scene, the cuts on Bridesmaid’s body were made to look like roman numerals, indicating pages of a book. If you took the first letter of every page, then you got the second victims name, Quarter Queen. At the second scene, the victim had glasses on, but she wore contacts. That led them to the next scene, Glass Station.
The last clue was the most complex. As I said before, the third victim had her left arm, and right leg. The whole room was supposed to be a clock. There were stuffed animals against every wall to indicate the sides of the clock, and the victim herself, was the middle. Her head was the hour hand, her arm the minute hand, and her leg the second hand. It was read as 6:15 and fifty seconds. They deciphered this to mean, 061550, which was the construction number for apartment buildings.
There, they found two possible victims, Blackberry Brown, and Blue Harps Babysplit. Throughout the whole investigation, Beyond Birthday was pretending to be a private detective hired by the families named Rue Ryuzaki. He and Naomi Misora, an FBI agent on a leave of absence working for L, evacuate the two people who they think are the next victims, and then take there places.

*pant, pant....* That felt great......
He's a fun character, and one of my favorites, but he's a character. Let's leave it at that.
