Ben Whishaw is at his best playing troubled romantics: Keats, Dylan, and his latest, Freddie Lyon on the new BBC series The Hour. Freddie might not have the same artistic pedigree as the others — he's a reporter for a 1956 English news program — but he shares a poet’s passion in his relentless pursuit of the truth. He also pines for his best friend/boss Bel (played 由 Romola Garai), who in turn lusts for their lead presenter Hector (Dominic West). We spoke with Whishaw about The 小时 ; his 下一个 film, 云, 云计算 Atlas, which he starts shooting in mid-September with Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis;...

In May 2004, a spidery-limbed, hollow-cheeked unknown walked onto the stage at the Old Vic and sent electric shocks of excitement through the auditorium. Playing Hamlet, aged 23, Ben Whishaw was one of the youngest Danish princes ever to commandeer the stage at this theatre, yet some critics felt they had witnessed a performance which could rank alongside those of Richard Burton, Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud and Peter O’Toole. One reviewer declared that ‘Whishaw, with his light, tremulous voice, painfully thin body, and the kind of cheekbones that will have adolescent girls swooning in...

Bond 星, 星级 Ben Whishaw is the new voice of Paddington Bear. He takes over from Colin Firth, who graciously opted for ‘conscious uncoupling’ from the upcoming film, called Paddington, because he couldn’t find the right vocal tone for the much-loved character.
Producer David Heyman and director Paul King told me that Colin sensed early on, before they did, he wasn’t right for the role.
‘He was saying: “Are 你 sure I’m right?” He was way ahead of us,’ Heyman admitted. ‘Colin was brilliant, but his voice was, ultimately, too mature.’
Paddington, he says, is an optimistic bear...

Of all the pleasing elements in the latest Bond film, the reinvention of Q as a young, anorak-clad computer genius was perhaps the most intriguing.
It was classic Ben Whishaw, an actor who is now being talked about as one of Britain’s finest. That he only worked on Skyfall for five days is surprising; that it was all he needed to make his mark, less so.
It is a quality that Daniel Craig has been aware of – painfully aware, it transpires – since 1999, when their paths first crossed on William Boyd’s directorial debut, The Trench.
Whishaw, then 17 and still studying for his A levels at...

What is it with Ben Whishaw and cats? Last time I met him, in a bar in Shoreditch in 2004, he was 23. Just six months out of Rada, he’d become famous overnight for his electrifying performance at the Old Vic as Hamlet – all skinny legs, Keith Richards hair stuffed under a beanie and nothing but rave reviews. It struck me that he was completely freaked out, rabbit-in-the-headlights startled 由 the idea that the world would be remotely interested in anything he had to say. The only personal information I extracted was that he’s a cat-lover – ‘the most I ever had at one time is 11’....

Ben Whishaw, who is currently juggling shooting the five-part BBC2 series 伦敦 Spy with his role as Q in Spectre, has just come off set and is adamant that this is the least spy thriller spy thriller 你 can imagine, a far cry from Bond.

“It doesn’t really feel like a spy thriller to me, although it sort of is,” he says, distractedly cradling a hot-water bottle. “It’s broader than that, because it’s about a character who’s not within that world, about somebody who stumbles into it and to whom it’s alien and mystifying. So it doesn’t feel like a traditional spy drama in that...

IAR: To begin with, is one of the most exciting aspects of being in a project like this the opportunity to play several different characters and really be part of an ensemble of actors as apposed to being number one 或者 number two on the call sheet? Is that why 你 wanted to be in this movie?

Ben Whishaw: Definitely. None of us really knew what that would entail until we were there doing it. It did create a very special atmosphere and we have to thank Tom Hanks for guiding us in that because he's such a powerful person. There are lots of powerful people in the cast of course, but if he hadn't...

Ben Whishaw’s turn as hi-tech boffin Q in the new James Bond film Skyfall is 《勇敢传说》 new territory indeed, he tells James Rampton.
Ben Whishaw admits that he was completely blindsided 由 this one. Hailed as one of the finest actors of his generation, the 32-year-old is about to play the MI6 boffin Q – all gadgets and geekiness — in Skyfall, the new Bond movie. But, he confesses, “I absolutely did not see the offer coming.”

Whishaw prefers not to discuss his personal life, saying: "For me, it’s important to keep a level of anonymity. As an actor, your job is to persuade people that you’re someone else. So if you’re constantly telling people about yourself, I think you’re shooting yourself in the foot." In 2011 he told Out magazine, "As an actor 你 have total rights to privacy and mystery, whatever your sexuality, whatever 你 do. I don't see why that has to be something 你 discuss openly because 你 do something in the public eye. I have no understanding of why we turn actors into celebrities." However, in August 2013 a representative for Whishaw confirmed that he entered into a civil partnership with Australian composer Mark Bradshaw in August 2012.

你 play the young composer Robert Frobisher in your main storyline. Did 你 have to study music?

Ben Whishaw: Tom [Tykwer] phoned me three months before we were going to shoot and said, “You need to have 钢琴 lessons.” So he sent me the score and I found a teacher in London. Miao-miao, her name was. I learned a lot about Frobisher that way.

Which was the most liberating character to play?

BW: I liked being the woman [Whishaw plays Hugh Grant’s wife in the modern-day storyline]. It was only one day’s filming. We did this whole experiment with lots of prosthetics and creases and wrinkles...
