Merlin faces an agonising choice when the opportunity to bring magic to the kingdom is offered…

At one point in this episode, when Merlin seems on the point of making a decision that will condemn a man to die, Gaius asks what happened to the young lad who came into his chambers a few years earlier. He grew up, Merlin says bluntly. It sums up not just this episode, but this entire series of Merlin, which has a much stronger serial feel than any of its predecessors. The arrival of Mordred as a Knight of Camelot, combined with the vision Merlin had in the first episode, has changed the parameters by which Merlin judges everything, and with conflicting advice from various quarters, he doesn’t know which way to jump.

Things are much darker now: it’s almost as if we’ve bypassed Camelot’s Golden Age completely and are going straight to its downfall, with portents, judgements and deaths among the Knights. Once again, Arthur decides to be a king leading from the front, much to Guinevere’s displeasure, and his approach is beginning to infect those around him. We learned what Arthur’s Bane truly is, and we’re seeing it in operation. While there’s unlikely ever to be parity between Merlin and Arthur, the king is turning to him for advice far more than before – but the question this season is throwing up increasingly is, will he listen in time?

Verdict: A dark episode with some worrying portents for the future… 7/10

Sigh. It is sounding more and more like the show runners are going to go down the traditional ending to the legend of Arthur and Camelot. I can not say that I am happy about this. I feel robbed. From the first series based on what the great dragon said to Merlin, I thought that we would see Camelot's golden age, the return of magic and Arthur and Merlin creating this Utopia. Alas it appears that this is not to be. Instead we get Arthur ruling for 4 years, Merlin still hiding his secret, no golden age of Camelot, and Arthur dying with no heirs. This just breaks my Arthur/Gwen/Arwen loving heart. :-(

Off to run some errands. Third day of our office being closed due to having no power because of hurricane Sandy. I feel like a kid with snow days. :-)

I just don't know...... I am not sure what he heck I signed up for with Merlin. This series it turn out to be like a series of books I read once. I start out loving them. By the last book I was skipping chapter altogether because i just stopped caring about the characters. This is what is happening to Merlin. At this point I watch to see what Gwen is going to be doing. To see what part Mordred is going to play. I am not to sure about Arthur or Merlin at this point. I guess in this version Albion isn't going to happen. Or maybe Arthur dies, leaving Gwen and Merlin to rule Camelot... Somehow that sounds like a good idea! I feel better already, lol.

O well I guess we will have to wait and see..

Famfan I agree with you, this is such a let down. Everything feels so rushed. If this is the end then why not give us 20 episodes instead. Most American shows have 20 or more episodes, then they could have tied all the loose ends and give us a more realistic ending. This just does not feel right, no Albion, no heir, Gwen alone, left behind to fight Morgana and does Mordred dies also or are those two left to torture Gwen. Even with Merlin on her side what a lonely existence for Gwen, she will never marry again and her brother is dead by then. Bradley was not in the last scene, brought his mother to see Angel's performance, which means Angel gave a powerful performance at the end, at Arthur's funeral. This is so sad and a total let down. I wanted a twist to the legend, just like the enchanted/betrayal and they live happy ever after.

Arthur won't die. No no and no...
Gwen is obviously the only one with the brain there, so no one listens to her,sigh... And Arthur for once actually listens to Merlin, and probably makes a bad decision.. Oh well, I just hope that scene with Arthur and Gwen won't be disappointing.

I doubt Arthur will die this early. We have to remember that just because Merlin saw it happen, doesn't mean it will happen like he saw it. Remember when Morgana saw Gwen be crowned Queen, tried to stop it twice and it ended up happening (different to how she dreamt it). so I do think that Arthur will still be killed by Mordred, just when he is older and has actually fulfilled his destiny of uniting Albion.
