Hmmm...I'm sure the racers take good care of their dogs but they make them work too hard? I think you can say it's cruel or not only if you know somebody or seen racers (or if you are one) *shrugs*
Huskys in particular were bred 2 pull sleds, and most of the time they have fun doing it. it's kinda like playin' fetch with a Retriever...they were bred 2 retrieve. and, when they r not racing, they r treated very well by the people raising them.
My aunt adopted two Siberian Huskies from a racer. They never raced because they couldn't work with the rest of the dogs on the team. Believe me when I tell you those dogs were born to do this. Its instinctual. If there's snow, and your walking them on a leash be prepared to be dragged when they take off for absolutely no reason at all.
The only thing that I am against is if they wip them to get them to go faster. That is WRONG.
I voted "unsure" but a more accurate phrase for me is "all sledders are different".
It's like pet owning in a way; the act itself isn't necessarily cruel, but some sled dogs have better lives than others due to how they are treated. Some sledders respect the animals, others abuse them to make them do what they want.
I'm okay with animals being given jobs, as long as they are respected by the person and treated well. Same with people. :)
So long as the dogs are well taken care of (given proper medicine and check-ups before and after the race, given enought food and water, and not over-worked) I see nothing wrong with it.
